context
jamal’s 30th birthday at an old mansion on beacon hill. the brief was an arc: a chic daytime garden party that turned by midnight into a garden of good and evil dance session.
constraint
one house, one garden, and many friend groups with different music tastes and dance cultures. the system had to let people move between rooms and outside spaces while one set carried a crowd that did not share one musical language.
intervention

multi-zone audio pushed the dance floor through the house and out into the garden. a balcony booth, styled as a boiler room, remained audible inside the house and across the lawn. minimal architectural lighting picked out the mansion and landscaping as the day fell away.

the set moved between genres, shifting the dance floor’s center of gravity until jamal’s friends and chosen family occupied it together.

outcome
after sunset, the garden party inverted. the lawn became the dance floor while guests continued circulating through the house and garden.
